A large number of people, even when they are 30+, have a fear of visiting a dentist. Most of us have been dragging this fear since childhood when the very thought of the word "dentist" was painful. However, when it comes to implant placement, the situation is a little different. In the case of tooth loss, many patients choose alternative solutions such as dental bridge or denture and avoid implants just because of the fear that comes of not being sufficiently aware of their implantation and their benefits. Below, we bring you the most common myths about dental implants that have the greatest impact on patients.
Myth #1: Dental Implants are painful
This is definitely the most common myth. The procedure itself is not as painful, as it’s considered to be. The whole process is done under local anesthesia, with no pain to the patient.
Myth #2: The recovery time is too long
Dental implants do require a healing process and it may vary from patient to patient. Usually, it takes 2-3 months, but in the meantime, there are temporary replacements for the missing tooth that do not affect patient’s look or day-to-day life.
Myth #3: Dental implants are too expensive
Compared to dentures or dental bridges, dental implants can be a bit more expensive, but if we consider the fact that these replacements have to be changed every 5-10 years, meanwhile implants can last for a lifetime, there is nothing to be compared.
Myth #4: Dental Implants are unsafe
Another myth that is completely untrue. Dental implant technology, with more than 50 years of evolution, today has about a 95% success rate (up to 99% if they are cared for properly). And there is one more thing: when installing implants, you don’t have to brush/damage your natural tooth.
Myth #5: They don’t look like natural teeth
Dental implants in most cases look so real that people won’t even be able to make a difference. Only if the patient explicitly requests very white color for crowns the difference can be noticed.
As you can see, there is nothing to be scared of. Dental implants are, so far, the best solution for missing teeth. So, don’t let myths or fear stop you from having a beautiful smile in a short and completely safe time.
